Omega fatty acids can be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. Two of the omega fatty acids are vital - i.e. essential - for us humans, namely alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid and linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 fatty acid.
The human organism is able to metabolize these two fatty acids into biologically active substances. However, the body's own capacity for conversion is limited. This means the following: If too many omega-6 fatty acids are supplied, the omega-3 conversion is restricted. The main reason for this is that the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid produces certain tissue hormones, which in turn generate free radicals.
