Symptoms

The symptoms listed below may also be associated with other health problems. Therefore, it makes sense to test for STIs on a regular basis. In the table you will find typical symptoms of the four STIs treated by our STI Basic:

1. Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis)

DK types are responsible for a chlamydial infection of the urinary and genital tract. This manifests, for example, as inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or inflammation of the ureter (urethritis) with a burning sensation during urination or discharge. Symptoms in men include pain during urination and abnormal discharge from the penis. If the infection is left untreated, bacteria can back up and lead to inflammation of the prostate or female internal reproductive organs, which can cause infertility. It can also lead to conjunctivitis, so-called pool conjunctivitis, as it can be transmitted through water. In women, the infection usually occurs without symptoms, so it can easily be transmitted to men, who then develop symptoms. An infection is especially dangerous during pregnancy, as the fetus can be harmed. Type L1-L3 infection leads to sexually transmitted inguinal lymphogranuloma, which manifests as enlarged lymph nodes in the groin. This form of chlamydia is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions.

2. Gonorrhoea

2-7 days after infection, men experience urethritis in the acute phase with itching, purulent discharge, painful urination and frequent need to urinate. Some men may not notice any symptoms for up to a month. If the infection is not treated, it can lead to inflammation of the prostate in the chronic phase. Women may be infected without symptoms, so the disease remains undetected and untreated for a long time. Otherwise, a variety of local inflammatory reactions are possible in the area of the bladder or female reproductive organs such as the ovaries with the risk of infertility. An infection is especially dangerous during pregnancy, as the unborn child can be harmed.

3. Trichomonas (Trichomonas vaginalis)

Most people infected with Trichomonas vaginalis have no symptoms, and the infection can remain undetected for years. Trichomoniasis affects both women and men. Symptoms are more common in women. Symptoms can occur 5 to 28 days after infection. Symptoms include pain, burning or itching in the penis, urethra (urethritis) or vagina (vaginitis). A foul-smelling, thin vaginal discharge is also possible. Symptoms for both sexes may increase during intercourse and urination.

4. Genital mycoplasma

The infection causes inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) in both men and women, which is accompanied by mucopurulent discharge from the urinary tract and painful urination. In women, it can also trigger inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) and internal genitalia, which are associated with infertility as a long-term consequence.
